Art as a Focusing Catalyst

In the class room, or in any face-to-face interaction, art provides a refuge from the gaze of those who approach topics that make us uneasy or intimidate us. In learning01.htm I suggest taking notes as one such activity. But certainly the use of oil pastels or any drawing or coloring medium that does not require other medium, like linseed oil or water for use, or a computer if they're available, is suitable to relieve the stress of intimidation as you approach either answerability or topics of controversy, such as religion and sex.What I mean by transparency here is that we have lived an adversarial reality for so long that transparency does not come easily. I have found that using my own art to illustrate events and relationships on the site gives a glimpse of who I am and what I'm trying to do that I might not be able to accomplish without visual text. I'm thinking of the illustrated manuscripts of old, and of Ivan Illich's In the Vineyard of the Text. This is one of the reasons I complain that we have eliminated art as text in our schools to replace the visual text with "objectified tests" that measure in a non-transparent way. When the test questions are complex, the measure of reason may be accurate, but it is by no means transparent to those who get the answer wrong, even when they're given the answer. That's because myriad steps are left out and the answer does not provide transparency. Bruner was approaching this when he relied on concrete examples to teach abstract concepts.Art as Social Context
