These short statements of our joint perceptions of your learning are growing from our review of the records and our experiences in class. In a cooperative learning world, in which our objective is to help each other gain critical insights, what should matter, instead of "grades" is such a report. Learning that I can tell you I have seen, either directly or through some of your work, and that you can confirm. That is learning accountability.

As we gain skill at this, a paragraph of recommendation should be your goal for the end of each course, each semester. If you were to realize that this is how I will end the course, and you were to want the best possible recommendation of your learning, we could interactively check our respective records all semester, and the recommendations could be detailed and helpful to all who want to know about your learning. Visit Letters of Recommendation for clues on how to do this.

The first ROL period is from Week 1 through Week 4 (September 4-27, 2002). The second ROL period is from Week 5 through Week 9 (September 29-November 1, 2002). And, the third and final ROL period is from Week 10 through 14 (November 3-December 6, 2002). The criteria for grading were the 5Cs -- communication, cooperation, consistency, competency, and creativity in conjunction with your latest grade form that I have on file. Also considered is Bloom and Krathwohl's taxonomy of learning: latent learning, recognition, recall, application, analysis, evaluation and synthesis.

For example, a student assesses ROL at an "A" and my response is "way overrated" (meaning that my assessment is 3 grades lower than the student's assessment), which would be a grade of "B".

Been prepared for every class by completing the internet modules and assigned readings. Student 1217 - Kept communicating throughout. On track in the creative measure. Lacking in talking in class. Student 1438 - Did not have a real understanding on what was expected at first, but trying hard to get on the right track. Prepared for discussion questions. Student 2222 - Been in constant contact with professor. Emails comments and questions. Makes connections between class and real life situations. Keep up to date in journal. Student 2328 - Have not been as vocal in class. Have done many things outside of class such as forming a group to help others. Been working hard on finding creative measures that are not ordinary. Student 2340 - Have done a lot of work in each of the areas. Creative area is lacking though. Student 2570 - Have done 4Cs. Communication was fine but can do more. 1st rol="C" [10/3] Done the readings. Takes notes. Participates in discussions. Talked in class at least once. Met with professor to discuss journal and creative measures. Weakest measure is creativity. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/9] Creative measures on site visit, short dialogue, and paper on labeling and the rave party in Racine. 3rd rol="Borderline C/C+" [12/10] Course grade="B-" [12/17]

Student 2870 - Read the assigned readings. Answered discussion questions. Contributed to class. Went beyond the materials. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B" [10/10] Communicated through email. Cooperated by talking about grade and sharing discussions with other students. Consistently coming to class on time and reading the materials. Showed competence by answering discussion questions. Creativity was spent trying to get a ridealong but also read articles about crimes relating to theories. 2nd rol="Borderline B/B+" [11/1] Did creative measures by doing a ridealong. Searching for articles on the internet. Reviewing a website. Interviewed friend on mentoring program. Showed competence in class, via email and tests. Student 3321 - Always in class. Always prepared with readings and questions. Participates in small groups. Searches on Internet. Student 3508 - Did not count pop quiz. Have been in class prepared except for one day. Have been helping othres with Dear Habermas. 1st rol="B+" [10/1] Have improved in this class. Student 3544 - Met most of the requirements or the 5cs, however still need to improve on communicating and on creativity. Attended every class. Shared views in class. Completed every assignment. Was prepared for pop quiz. 1st rol="B-" [10/1] Accomplished the 5Cs fairly well. Was consistent in daily attendance, have yet to miss class. Present with active class discussions and consistently shares point of view and asks questions. Attended site visit and wrote debriefing. 2nd rol="B" [11/1] Communicated learning on a consistent basis. Attended all but one class. Student 3606 - Done the modules on habermas and assigned readings. Kept journal. Contributed to class exercises. Decided on research topic. 1st rol="B+" [10/1] Was sick during this grading period and missed a couple of classes. However, did stay on task and did the Habermas exercises. Did participate in class discussions. Did work outside on gangs. Didn't email instructor as much as should have. Was more creative this time than last. Need to email more and dialogue more. 2nd rol="C+" [11/22] Out of all the rols, this one learned from most. Did some extra work outside of class on issues such as feminist theories. Asked questions. Student 3708 - Have not done much. [late] 1st rol="F" [12/10] Learning a lot more. [late] 2nd rol="Borderline D-/D" [12/10] Starting to better understand topics discussed in class and with professor. Student 3754 - Kept up with moduels but need more work on keeping up with the readings. Have not decided on research project yet. Communication and creative measures need improvement. Student 4021 - Knows what is going on and what is required in this class. Learned a bit. 1st rol="Borderline C+/B-" [10/7] Made a lot of strides from the first rol. Did a lot more. Student 4205 - There are more things that can do. Will be more active in class. 1st rol="C-" [11/15] Learned a lot. Worked fairly hard these five weeks. Student 4945 - Completed all 5Cs by keeping a journal to show learning. Asking questions and being active in and out of class. 1st rol="A" [10/3] Well into creative measures about a vast variety of topics. Rising above the weekly assignments and taking the time to email professor on problems and questions. That is where competence takes over in class and outside of class. Learning so much information on own. 2nd rol="A" [11/1] Increased creative measures and competence by reading a book for a week. Student 5050 - Uncertain of a grade. Have been trying to adapt. Does the work. 1st rol="C" [10/1] Did more work. Wrote down questions in journal. Did a lot more groupwork. Cooperation method works well. Attends class regularly. Emails when can. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/B-" [11/1] Enjoyed discussions on labeling theory and feminist criminology. Student 5277 - Definitely need to improve in some areas. This sheet has pointed that out. A slow starter. 1st rol="Borderline B-/C+" [10/11] Speaks up everyday in class. Communicates with email. Student 5438 - Learned a lot more than have recorded. Understanding of what was required to do wasn't very good. Grid form might not prove it. 1st rol="B-" Late grid form. During this ROL, had a lot of things going on. Lacked in a lot of areas but did do what could. Student 7793 - Communicated in class as well as multiple emails, some were put on Dear Habermas. Cooperated by helping others. Consistent incoming to class. Show competence by asking questions. Creativity is by scheduling ridealongs. 1st rol="B+" [10/5] Done all asked, and more. 2nd rol="Borderline B+/A-" [11/7] Did rather well on this rol. Student 7856 - Met most of 5Cs but needs improvement in competence and creativity. Kept up with readings. 1st rol="C" [10/14] Kept up with most of the 5Cs but did not put as much effort as could have. Student 8496 - Still learning how your system works but worked hard. Now, actually understands how to communicate learning through emails. 1st rol="B+" [10/5] Have had many interesting ping pong conversations regarding different topics. Learned to speak up in class. Always prepared. Attended two site visits. 2nd rol="Borderline A-/A" [11/1] Always prepared for class. Actively participated in group and class discussions. Student 8539 - After the first four weks, have gotten better at talking to professor and classmates. Accomplishng work ahead of time. 1st rol="C+" [10/1] Improved style of learning by participating more in class and in small groups.
