Notice that cat food can pop tops are holding the straps!
I just can't seem to resist them. I'd like to say it's for ecology;

Getting Ready for Sagrada Familia Projects

Over the weekend I attended the Fiber Fest Show in Santa Monica, California. I was hoping to gather enough information and materials to offer our community participants and students a broad variety of choices and skill levels for projects on talking about what matters.

reasons for paper craft, fiber craft, etc. - options to stimulate you to find your own medium

importance of different skill levels - if we don't keep growing from wherever we are, we atrophy, so always push to improve whatever skills you're using. always push for awareness that you are exercising your skills.

explanation and origin of Sagrada Familia - plastic intimacy explained - intimacy made in China????

importance of sharing what you create - the sharing creates the paper clips that connect the experiences in the "stew pot". Images make the experience easier to recapture. So do sounds (music), smells, tastes, touch (like your fingers remembering a piece you played on the piano, even though your mind couldn't reproduce the music you read). each one teach one.

respect - it's hard. but try to accept each person for whoever they are, instead of changing them into whoever you imagine them to be or would like them to be. try illocutionary discourse - try to hear how whatever they say to you gives you clues as to who they are - listen in good faith to try to "feel" for yourself what they are telling you they feel. we all need to be recognized, respected, for whatever we do, whoever we are. That's a baseline from which most of us will struggle to be more, do more. when we find positive ways to grow from a healthy baseline, we grow. negative feedback, especially when we have not earned such feedback with the intent of doing something negative, will stunt healthy growth and can lead us to grow as the wind sometimes does misshapen trees. (the ad with little kid exploding soday water bottle; mother shrieks, then pulls out faucet and sprays kid; a playful liquid battle ensues - think about the effect of mother's and kid's responses to this interaction.

Rock Climbing page for scrapbook. On DIY. Offers a great way to remind kids that you hae to think about lots of things in corrections. Management, budget, the overall goals of the corrections process, AND the health of the community itself through ensuring the best methods for avoiding recidivism. Each climber could remind us of a different task.

Tuesday, August 26, 2007. Finally scanned in an image of the vintage hankie holder that I wore out to dinner last night. The original image had the yellow strap on it. Changed it to green because the yellow broke up the continuity. Like it much better this way. Notice that I made the back of the hankie holder with one of my coasters. Same color yarn. It was faster just to use the coaster. Hope this makes you realize that found objects are acceptable in art works aimed at provoking conversations we hope lead to discussion of governance issues.

The coaster I used was green, almost exactly the same as the green on the pop tops. But for some reason, my scanner shows it as rose pink. Hmmm!!! I'll think on that later. If I can use a coaster to make a wearable or sendable piece of art, you can browse in a thrift shop, or your own closets, or the 99¢and use whatever. The point is the governance discourse, after all.

      • Theoretical Significance: I'll put up more info on this soon. Like why quilt blocks? Tradition, tradition. Family history. Family values. Building blocks of community - things we lose when family members are separated by wide distances or by things like prison, or by youth culture, for that matter.. Need to ask ourselves what cost distancing people from their neighborhoods, their families, their support groups has had on communal values, communal purposes, motivation to achieve, motivation to accept and negotiate difference. Corporate demands for relocation, for working in spaces in which workers cannot find living space, and correctional demands for space and for moving those experiencing "correction" - how have these affected shared values, respect for others, "savings," long term planning, education for innovation and creation, education for "training", etc.

      • Project Alternatives:

        • Maybe you have an old quilt example you can copy or make into an artwork for your family. One from a grandmother you or others in your family knew. Or maybe someone in your family makes or enjoys quilts. Piecework for September/October 2007 has a doll-size quilt to embroider. Lots of possibilities like that if you look around the Internet, or a magazine stand. If you can tie the quilt block you make into one that has some significance for people you know and care for, it will have more impact as a catalyst for discussion on the role of tradition and ritual in holding a community and its values together.

        • Ann Budd offers an example of a pattern to knit a quilt block. She uses them to make cards. If you have a cherished extended family, there's a way to bring tradition and family history to everyone's attention. Ann Budd does it with knitting. I'll post some examples of crochet, or Susan will, depending on which of us gets to it first. Don't hesitate to take whatever you find in your own context to illustrate for yourself and those with whom you share that context the importance of community and history.

    • Crochet swan centerpiecefrom a past issue of Piecework. Once these crocheted centerpieces graced many family homes. Some may be in your family. You may even find some in thrift shops. Think creatively. Wonder about those who made them and the meaning these handwork pieces had in another time. And how that relates to us today.

    • Paddle wheel Lace "This patterned [sic] was offered to readers following Nancie Wiseman's Personal Passion article about her grandmother. Nancie found this pattern in the back cover of her grandmother's photo album." If crochet is something you enjoy, why not do a small piece that resembles such a pattern, and make it into a card to share with others whom you can remind in this way of the importance of family history. Continuity is something nation-states rarely survive without. Continuity and history matter to each of us, even those who have sinned or deviated, if we ever expect them to return as useful members to the community.

What does this story tell us about the importance of recovery and healing for our veterans? Are we providing adequately for that today?

        A tad more elegant than most of us wear most of the time, and with a couple of beads missing because we used the wrong glue (oops!), this necklace attracts "oohs" and "ahhs" wherever Pat wears it. That's one of the purposes of adornment, even in nature, where the males usually get to dress more brightly and beautifully than the females.

        What does governance discourse suggest we should talk about when people are attracted? Try identity, multiple identities, and how complex each of us is and how that matters. Interdependence, again. How I behave and who I am backstage may be very different from how I behave and who I am frontstage. (Reference: Goffman, Presentation of Self in Everyday Life.)

        Beaded necklace purse jeanne started yesterday after talking with Susan about our projects.

        The sparkly crystal beads get lost in the blue crochet. We should use slightly larger ones. Maybe dark blue? And the single crochet is larger than the knit stitch. Surprise! OK, I can't think of everything the first time through. But maybe it would be better a little larger? I used a No. 5 steel crochet hook and No. 10 Royale Cotton Crochet thread. (Michael's) I like the beaded idea. I could use a little sparkle pick-me-up.

        And what on earth does this have to do with criminal justice? Well, consider that we all carry lots of cultural and social baggage with us, just like the keys and hanky and change we need to carry when we leave our offices and classrooms. We came up with these little purses to make our hands and heads free of some of that physical clutter and baggage. What do we need to do to free our correctional ideas of the cultural and social baggage we all carry?

        Used the eyedropper to duplicate colors, and the sprayer to soften edges. Have just covered the background and will now start to work on it.
