Children's Drawings on Peace
In response to Kara Cain's request for more children's drawings:
Look at Peace, Mike.
Notice that it's not very hard to add a little shadow, a little volume,
through shading. Mark Kistler teaches this on television and online.
Treat yourself and the young people you know to added sophistication in drawing.
Pat, I'll bet your grandchild, Aiden, would love this.
Anthrax Preparedness
In response to Patrina Smith's request for help in locating information:I went to the Center for Disease Control Site - Diseases. I scrolled down and linked to Anthrax. From there I linked to the second anthrax document, on preparedness, where I found:
SUSPICIOUS UNOPENED LETTER OR PACKAGE MARKED WITH THREATENING MESSAGE SUCH AS “ANTHRAX”:
- Do not shake or empty the contents of any suspicious envelope or package.
- PLACE the envelope or package in a plastic bag or some other type of container to prevent leakage of contents.
- If you do not have any container, then COVER the envelope or package with anything (e.g., clothing, paper, trash can, etc.) and do not remove this cover.
- Then LEAVE the room and CLOSE the door, or section off the area to prevent others from entering (i.e., keep others away).
- WASH your hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any powder to your face.
- What to do next…
- If you are at HOME, then report the incident to local police.
- If you are at WORK, then report the incident to local police, and notify your building security official or an available supervisor.
- LIST all people who were in the room or area when this suspicious letter or package was recognized. Give this list to both the local public health authorities and law enforcement officials for follow-up investigations and advice.

Notice how argument gives way to rhetoric. Osama bin Laden accuses us of killing thousands in Iraq. We answer that Saddam Hussein uses toxic gas on his own people. Is either an answer to the harms we have all caused? But in the hurling of imprecations and pejoratives at one another we find the distraction to deny our own complicity in moral wrongs. Thomas Friedman is a journalist. He is not writing to graduate seminar in theory. And I do not mean to criticize him on those grounds. But in a graduate seminar in theory we need to become aware of how easy it is to be side-tracked by rhetoric. It is not easy to argue in good faith. We will discuss this further in our session on moral dilemmas and the ethics of social justice.

Art
Islamic religious art reflects the Islamic belief in social justice and equality. The use of patterns and repetition stresses the lack of a hierarchy, and of dominance, giving all an equal footing before God. Thus Islamic art reflects Islamic beliefs specifically in denying figural art which would give some greater recognition than others.
