Children's Drawings on Peace
In response to Kara Cain's request for more children's drawings:
Look at Peace, Mike.
Notice that it's not very hard to add a little shadow, a little volume,
through shading. Mark Kistler teaches this on television and online.
Treat yourself and the young people you know to added sophistication in drawing.
Pat, I'll bet your grandchild, Aiden, would love this.
Anthrax Preparedness
In response to Patrina Smith's request for help in locating information:I went to the Center for Disease Control Site - Diseases. I scrolled down and linked to Anthrax. From there I linked to the second anthrax document, on preparedness, where I found:
SUSPICIOUS UNOPENED LETTER OR PACKAGE MARKED WITH THREATENING MESSAGE SUCH AS “ANTHRAX”:
- Do not shake or empty the contents of any suspicious envelope or package.
- PLACE the envelope or package in a plastic bag or some other type of container to prevent leakage of contents.
- If you do not have any container, then COVER the envelope or package with anything (e.g., clothing, paper, trash can, etc.) and do not remove this cover.
- Then LEAVE the room and CLOSE the door, or section off the area to prevent others from entering (i.e., keep others away).
- WASH your hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any powder to your face.
- What to do next…
- If you are at HOME, then report the incident to local police.
- If you are at WORK, then report the incident to local police, and notify your building security official or an available supervisor.
- LIST all people who were in the room or area when this suspicious letter or package was recognized. Give this list to both the local public health authorities and law enforcement officials for follow-up investigations and advice.

Reading Preparations for the SessionHere is your chance to ask questions of one who knows intimately Zimbabwe. Think of the impressions Father Peter brought us of Zambia, a neighboring country, and begin to build a more intimate knowledge of Africa. You are welcome to send in your questions, and we'll ask Teresa Mason, who knew and invited Professor Furusas, who teaches at CSUDH, to forward them to Professor Furusas.

Teaching and Review Essay Index
New This Week:
Notice how argument gives way to rhetoric. Osama bin Laden accuses us of killing thousands in Iraq. We answer that Saddam Hussein uses toxic gas on his own people. Is either an answer to the harms we have all caused? But in the hurling of imprecations and pejoratives at one another we find the distraction to deny our own complicity in moral wrongs. Thomas Friedman is a journalist. He is not writing to graduate seminar in theory. And I do not mean to criticize him on those grounds. But in a graduate seminar in theory we need to become aware of how easy it is to be side-tracked by rhetoric. It is not easy to argue in good faith. We will discuss this further in our session on moral dilemmas and the ethics of social justice.
Teaching Essays
Reactions to Terrorist/Victim Portraits Includes comments from Soka University Japan students and jeanne's commentary on using the art work to expand the imaginary. I would also suggest this file as an example of how we can write together and of the kind of conceptual linking I would like to see us learn to use. jeanne

Map of Zimbabwe On this map you can find Victoria Falls, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe across the Zambezi River. That's where I met the HUGE crocodile, luckily asleep. The crocodile, that is, not me. Aand if you follow the road going northeast in Zambia, you'll see Lusaka, where we watched the eclipse.
Map of Zambia Follow the road north of Lusaka up through the Copperbelt almost to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There you'll see Ndola, where Father Peter grew up. About two hours drive north of Landless Corners, which is just outside of Lusaka.

The Pickup by Nadine Gordimer. Book Review in the New York Times by Michiko Kakutani. backup
"Ms. Gordimer's ability . . . to delineate the psychological consequences of exile, class
disaffection and racial prejudice enables her to lend Julie and Ibrahim's
relationship an unusual poignancy and depth. We are made to understand the
ways in which they invent each other in their own minds, how they respond
not only to the qualities that make their beloved an individual, but also to the
qualities that the other embodies as a member of an alien culture."
Nadine Gordimer and the South African Experience Article on the Nobel Prize Website. Nadine Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991.
Take a moment to watch the animated introduction. Notice how a few strokes can change prison bars into shouts of freedom. The power of visual literacy.
Scroll about halfway down the file and click on the panoramic view camera. Take a few minutes for the sociology of place to sink in. What is the visual impact?
And take a moment to notice the "jackass" penguins of Robben Island.
The Jackass Penguin These penguins got their name from the sound they make, like the braying of a jackass.
